Each year, Don Whitley Scientific staff choose a charity to donate funds to during the calendar year. After holding a vote involving many different charities, the majority of DWS staff voted for Yorkshire Air Ambulance for our 2018 charity. Yorkshire Air Ambulance was established in 2000 and has developed into a sophisticated emergency service that provides state-of-the-art emergency medical care throughout Yorkshire. Yorkshire has a vast topography that not only includes remote, rural and densely populated areas but also includes major motorways and road networks such as the M62, M1, A1 and M18. Don Whitley Scientific was established in West Yorkshire, making this a fitting choice for this year’s charity.
In 2017 Don Whitley Scientific donated funds for a girl named Isabelle Barnett, who suffers from Rett syndrome, a rare genetic neurological and developmental disorder that affects the way the brain develops, causing a progressive inability to use muscles for eye and body movements and speech. We managed to raise £3,806 which according to Isabelle’s parents, should enable the purchase of a special ‘goto’ seat, a chair for the bath and a standing frame. All staff worked hard at raising funds by supporting cake sales, staff lunches, various seasonal raffles and supplying fantastic recipes for a Cookery book which sold extremely well. Many of our suppliers were also extremely generous in donating great prizes for our big Christmas Raffle.
